Knights Football Defeats Georgetown
Grayson, KY – On September 7, 2019, there were numerous firsts on the campus of Kentucky Christian University. 1) KCU's first night football game; 2) Women's volleyball claims the first AAC win in the new conference and 3) Oh yeh, Knights beat Georgetown 30-27!!! Not exactly grammatically correct but feels really good to say.
In what can only be described at a gritty performance, the Knights shook off several haymakers thrown by the Tigers and continued to chip away at their lead until they claimed victory on the final play of the game … a 25-yard field goal by Eric Parra Curiel (SR/Victorville, CA). Georgetown held a 17-point lead at the half and had two 1-play possessions; a 64-yard strike from Hunter Krause to JJ Ogbogu on their first possession of the game and a 76-yard bomb from Krause to Jake Johnson in the fourth quarter. But the Knights kept playing!
KCU put together a six-play, 75-yd drive that culminated in a 1-yd De'Anta Sipp (JR/Senatobia, MS) touchdown run that cut the GC lead to 10-points. Following a Georgetown field goal, the Knights responded with an eight-play, 73-yd drive to cut the lead to six points with a 3-yd TD pass from Josh Drucker (SO/Carrollton, TX) to Kris Lewis (SR/Birmingham, AL). This single-digit lead was short-lived as the Tigers touched paydirt to push the lead to 13 points, but that would be their final score of the contest as the KCU defense stiffened and gave the offense time to do their job.
A TD pass from Drucker to Anton Wheeler (SR/Birmingham, AL) cut the lead back to seven after GC blocked the extra point attempt at 20-27. A 2-yd touchdown run by Barkei Minter (SR/Bessemer, AL) and a successful extra point tied the game at 27-27. After a big fourth-down sack, KCU drove the ball to the Georgetown 6-yard line for a game-winning field goal attempt only to see it blocked but a roughing the kicker penalty placed the ball at the 3-yd line. During the play, KCU Kicker Parra-Curiel was injured and had to leave the game. The penalty gave the Knights a new set of downs but less than six seconds on the clock and no kicker to attempt another game-winner. Following an incomplete pass to DeVon McCoy (SO/North Charleston, NC), the stage was set for some last-second heroics … literally! With 1.5 seconds remaining, Parra Curiel returned to the game, with a very noticeable limp, to attempt a 20-yd game-winner. After a delay of game penalty on KCU, Parra Curiel lined-up his 25-yd kick and calmly punched it through the uprights. Pandemonium erupted!
Sipp led the ground game by rushing for 126 yds on 23 carries plus the touchdown. Replacing the starter, Jakwon Roberts (JR/Smiths Station, AL), Drucker hit on 10 of his 18 passing attempts for 221 yds and two touchdowns. Roberts was 13/22 and 140 yds but had an interception. Coach Fipps three receiving amigos were up to the task tonight as McCoy caught 12 passes for 213 yds, Wheeler had seven catches for 126 yds and a touchdown and Kris Lewis with a TD and four receptions.
The Knights are on the road next week at NCAA I, Morehead State University. Kickoff is set for 4:00PM.
