Knights Football Opens Season With Road Win
Crestview Hills, KY – The Kentucky Christian University football team opened the 2019 season with a Mid-South Conference road win at Thomas More College. Thomas More, the newest member of the conference, was dead set to begin their new conference affiliation with the win, but KCU posted two 20-point quarters on the way to the victory.
Knights quarterback, Dorian Isaak (JR/Juneau, AK) threw for three touchdowns in the first quarter and then another in the second. Anton Wheeler (SR/Birmingham, AL) caught two first half touchdown passes, one for 55 yds and the other a 80 yd bomb and his evening wasn't over as he pulled in a pass from Jakwon Roberts (JR/Smiths Station, AL) in the fourth quarter to complete the hat-trick. Also completing the receiving hat-trick was Devon McCoy who accounted for one first quarter TD and the final two Knights scores, including the game winner with 9 seconds remaining on the clock. Kris Lewis (SR/Birmingham, AL) hauled in the last passing score for KCU and De'Anta Sipp (JR/Senatobia, MS) provided the lone rushing touchdown for the night.
Statistically, the Knights piled up 707 yards of total offense on 93 plays from scrimmage, 184 on the ground and a whopping 523 through the air. Leading the way on the ground for KCU was Sipp with 140 yds on 23 carries and a long carry of 32 yds. From the quarterback position, Isaak compiled a substantial stat line by going 17-29 on passing attempts for 367 yds and four TDs before leaving the game with a minor injury. Roberts stepped in and completed 20-27 attempts for 156 yds and three scores.
Kentucky Christian placed three receivers in the triple-digit yardage club, one for 200+ yds. Wheeler hauled in eight passes for 225 yds and the aforementioned three touchdowns. McCoy grabbed 16 tosses for 155 yds and his three scores and Lewis accounted for 11 catches and 114 yds and a score. On special teams, Barkei Minter (SR/Bessemer, AL) added 131 yds between kickoff and punt returns.
Defensively, Germonta Brisbane (FR/Charleston, SC) had nine total tackles followed by the trio of Austin Archer, Jalen Feltha and Trey Malashevich (JR/Ceredo, WV) with eight each. KCU won the turnover battle as well, Anthony Grant (FR/Augusta, GA) had two picks along with one by Malashevich and a fumble recovery by Chris Draper (JR/Lebanon, TN).
The Knights return to the field next week with their home opener against Georgetown College. Kickoff is set for 6:00PM.
