Knights Lose to Cumberland University
Grayson, KY – In a game that statistically was very close, the final score was not indicative of the effort given. Cumberland won by a 41-22 margin and produced a goal-line stand in the first quarter that set the tone for their play throughout the remainder of the game.
Though it is frequently difficult to place a lot of emphasis on one series early in a game, this time it was apparent. KCU and the Phoenix had traded touchdown on their first possessions and CU had punched in another on their second when the Knights marched straight down the field to inside the 5-yd line. The Phoenix defense stiffened and refused to allow the touchdown on four straight attempts. That energy enabled them to put another first quarter score on the board and the Knights were in catch-up mode for the remainder of the game.
For the Knights, Jug Smith accounted for 287 yds of offense, 222 through the air and 65 on the ground and three touchdowns. He connected with Anton Wheeler for an aerial score and ran in two.
With this being the final home game of the season, the KCU football program said goodbye to 12 players, two student staff members and the lone senior cheerleader:
Staff: Jenna Heller
Becca Mullen
Cheer: Paige Kennedy
Players: Brady Chastain
Thank you to all and you will be missed. Go Knights.
