Faulkner Handles Knights in Season Opener
Grayson, KY – In what was the season opener for both teams, the Eagles of Faulkner University traveled to the KCU campus and walked away with a 63-8 win.
With 80+ true freshmen, the Knights knew it would be an uphill battle against the much more experienced Eagle squad and experience proved to be the biggest factor. Faulkner scored with just 51 seconds gone in the first quarter on a Pick-6 and never looked back. By scoring at least two touchdowns in all four quarters, the Eagles took control early and maintained that control throughout the game.
Overall, KCU hung right with Faulkner in many team statistical categories such as passing yards, time of possession, etc., but the most glaring of the stat differences were the dominance Falkner had in total yards (429-193) and turnovers (FU-0, KCU-7) where KCU lost five fumbles and had two passes intercepted.
The Knights were led in rushing by the tandem of Darian Rawls (32) and De'Anta Sipp (31) while starting quarterback, Darius Strickland, amassed 106 yards passing on 14/27 attempts. Germaine Williams (59) and Hakeem Ellington (46) led all Knights in receiving yardage. For the Eagles, Faulkner's Joe Jones and Mason Blocker led them in rushing with 76 and 72 yards, respectively. Clayton Nicholas completed 10/12 passing attempts for 119 yards and two touchdowns while his favorite receiver, Jacob McCrary, tallied 59 receiving yards for the afternoon.
The opening portion of the season doesn't get any easier for the Knights as they travel to Morehead State University on a short week for a rare Thursday night game. Game time at MSU's Jayne Stadium is set for 6:00 PM
