Baseball Splits Day 1 Twin-Bill with SAU
Grayson, KY – The first two games of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series between the KCU Knights and St. Andrews University were played today. In the first game, St. Andrews won 3-9 with a late game surge. Kentucky Christian fought back to capture the second game 4-3 on a walk-off single by Cole Thomason.
Game 1: The second set of Knights (Yes, SAU are also the Knights.) inched out to a one-run lead in the third inning and managed to hold it until the seventh when their offense erupted for three runs. They added some insurance in the eighth as they pushed two more across the plate. KCU had several scoring opportunities put were unable to get the timely hit needed to put pressure on the SAU pitching staff.
For the KCU Knights, Evan Juniper led the offense, as he was 1-2 (double) with two RBIs and two walks. Having two to his credit, Cristian Garcia was the only player for KCU to get multiple hits while Cody Holub, Tucker Sorenstam, and Blake Wood scored one run each.
Game 2: Once again, Juniper generated some much-needed offense for the KCU-version of Knights with a 1-3 performance at the dish but that one hit proved to be large. With Yan Rivera on base, Juniper crushed a monster, opposite-field shot over the left-centerfield fence.
The ensuing two-run advantage remained in place until single runs scored by St. Andrews in the 6th and 7th innings tied things up going into the bottom half of the 7th and final inning. With SAU bringing in closer from the bullpen, KCU needed to manufacture a run somehow and that is just what they did. Garcia opened the inning with a walk and was promptly sacrificed to second by Max Moore. Following their second out, Thomason singles on a line drive to right field to score Garcia.
