KCU Battles All Forty Minutes, Comes Up with Big Conference Win
Grayson - In a game that featured many stops and starts due to a busy whistle from the refs, our Knights fought hard the whole way, pulling out a 63-56 victory over the Truett McConnell Bears. This win is the first of the New Year for the Knights, and the 2nd of the day for Kentucky Christian University following our Lady Knights lead.
The first half saw leading scorer Kourtney Ware pick up his 3rd foul with 10 minutes remaining till halftime. Senior David Woodard helped pick up the scoring slack with 16 points at half with four 3-pointers made. It was the defense that kept everything in play for our squad, holding the Bears to 39% from the field and just 16.7% from behind the arc.
The first half had seven lead changes and two ties during the first half of the game, the 2nd-half was just as hotly contested, showing each time had the passion and fight to go the extra mile to pick up a victory.
After hitting consecutive 3-point shots to score his first buckets of the day before finishing with 9 points, Ware picked up foul number four with 16 minutes remaining. This was a moment where Coach Charlie Pack showed his trust and faith in his team, and Ware, leaving him in the game until fouling out with a lead and barely a minute to play. That decision, and the effort of the Knights, led to a great win vs. a larger team, after playing nearly 15 minutes without Ware in the first half. David Woodard led the way with 19 points, 8 rebounds, with 2 assists, steals and blocks. Deondre Ross was the only other in double digits with 12 points, adding in 7 boards and 5 assists.
This victory puts the Knights at 4-13 overall, and 4-9 in conference. Our KCU looks to build on their momentum January 11th (7:30 PM) at Bluefield, before returning home next Saturday, January 14th to face Reinhardt. That game is scheduled for a 4:00 PM start.
