Knights Lose to CIU by 5
Grayson, KY - The men of our KCU Knights returned home for their first game of 2023 at Ron Arnett Court to play conference opponent Columbia International University. After a fast-paced, hard-fought battle, the Knights fell 90-85 to the CIU Rams.
Seniors Kourtney Ware and David Woodard started the game hot offensively, scoring 19 of the teams first 29, which helped the Knights start off up 29-20 the first 10 minutes of the contest. Sophomore’s David McCallum Jr. and Deondre Ross both had a productive first half. McCallum gave the Knights eight points, five rebounds and two assists, while Ross added 11 points, and four rebounds. Junior guard Brevin Jones added six points, two assists, and a rebound to go with two steals. Our Knights led by five points, 46-41, after the hotly contested 1st half of play.
The CIU Rams opened the 2nd half on a 10-0 run to take the lead 51-46, which led to our Knights fighting from behind the remainder of the 2nd half. And fight they did, never letting CIU pull away, playing hard on both sides until the final buzzer. With 11.7 seconds and trailing 88-85, David Woodard took a charge giving the Knights another opportunity to tie the ball game, but unfortunately weren’t able to provide more magic on an evening they came back time and time again to challenge the Rams.
Kourtney Ware led all scorers with 27 points, while David Woodard added 18, McCallum and Ross both added 13, with Brevin Jones dropping in 12 big points off the bench.
The Knights (3-13 overall, 3-9 in conference) will look to get back in the win column this Saturday on the back end of a women’s/men’s double header at Ron Arnett Court against Truett McConnell.
